On June 20, 2024, Mrs. Iola Mae Peace Winstead, a resident of Roxboro, North Carolina, who was known to many as “Ola”, moved to her celestial home.

Born February 4, 1930 to the late Weldon and Mary Royster Downey in Stovall, North Carolina, Mrs. Winstead was the youngest of six siblings. Her mother passed away when Ola was an infant and she was lovingly raised from infancy by her aunt and uncle, William H. and Ida Downey Peace. Mr. and Mrs. Peace (who are now deceased) had three young adult children of their own and Ola sometimes felt as if she had five parents instead of two.

At an early age she accepted Christ and joined St. Matthew Baptist Church. After graduation from Joe Toler High School, she completed studies in cosmetology at DeShazor’s Beauty College in Durham, North Carolina. In 1958, she married Carlyle Winstead (who predeceased her) and they settled in Roxboro. Mrs. Winstead was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Roxboro and served faithfully for more than 60 years. During this time, her church roles included Choir Member, Secretary and later, President of the Missionary Society and Church Financial Secretary. In 1985, she became the first female member of the Board of Trustees.

Professionally, she owned and operated a beauty salon where she enjoyed talking with her patrons as well as providing beauty services. She was also a skillful tailor who never retired from doing alterations for a few “special” customers. She loved to travel. In addition to visiting many states within the United States, she traveled throughout the Caribbean and to a number of countries – including Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland and Israel.

Ms. Iola Mae Peace Winstead leaves to cherish her memory her nieces: Alma Peace Bullock (Mack), Gwendolyn Peace Taylor, Dorothy Downey Gill (Ronald) Martina Downey (Tawanna), Vernet Downey West, Stephanie Downey McCrae, Lorna Downey, Zina Downey, and Terry Akridge Downey; nephew Willie Downey; close friend and caregiver Phyllis Bradsher; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Ola was a committed prayer warrior and a woman of unshakeable faith; she will be missed and long remembered by many.
